        • TOMORROWLOVE

          BY: ROSAMUND SMALL

          WATCH
        • Black Mirror meets Modern Love in this wry but heartfelt theatrical film journey, where viewers get to choose their own path.

        • WELCOME

Welcome to the world of TomorrowLove, 13 individual playlets written by Rosamund Small which together form a whole. We have filmed each playlet and produced it as a separate film, so that you may meander through them in whatever order you like, whenever you like from February 28–March 7.

TomorrowLove was rehearsed and filmed at Studio 58, Langara College, on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Nation). Unceded means that the land was taken—rather than surrendered, sold, or given away. Ancestral means that the land has been stewarded and conserved by the Musqueam Nation for thousands of years. The land was cared for in traditional and sustainable ways to support the Nation’s needs.

The Musqueam have given Langara College the name snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓, which means house of teachings. This references the advice given to a child to build their character and guide them into adulthood. You can learn more about the Musqueam Nation and their history, culture, traditions, language, and initiatives here.

We at Studio 58 are grateful to be able to learn and play on the lands of the Musqueam. Where are you joining us from? We invite you to take some time to acknowledge the land you are on and what land stewardship means to you. You can learn more about this at native-land.ca.

        • A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

We are in the beginning stages of the digital revolution. This revolution will change us fundamentally and profoundly as a species, even more than the industrial revolution did.

The progress in infotech & biotech will give us more products, apps and choices than ever before, but because we don’t fully understand the complexity of human consciousness, these new technologies will disrupt our mental systems and relationships. There is a product in each of these short plays that has radical consequences for the characters.

A worthy piece of art can sow a seed deep inside of you, which burrows, and sometime later, sprouts ideas and emotions that you hadn’t expected. We expect some seeds will be sown as you watch these stories.

Making theatre in a pandemic has been a unique challenge. The way we do things is challenged. Yay! How we do this is challenged. (Cry! Zoom hurts my head! Actors 6 feet apart! Don’t touch! Masks!! Always! Imagine we can see each other’s faces!)

And, there is something fantastic and freeing about our constraints (Ok—shift! Make do! Change! Adapt!). The old rules get bent and we become less precious, more responsive. More accountable to each moment. Make the shape that fits the world. We’ve been humbled by the resilience and adaptability we’ve seen over the past month and a half. The ‘going on’ part of “the show must go on” is an innate human drive that could and should be celebrated daily. These students at Studio 58 are extraordinary. Every day they’ve changed us, just by showing up. They’ve been the light in this weird old winter.

The fact that this theatrical experience is digital couldn’t be more apt. As you experience these short plays on your screen, we hope you enjoy them as much as we have creating them.
